Sustainability and Organizational Capacity Development
Sustainability and organizational capacity development strengthen organization’s ability to manage, adapt, and sustain performance over time, ensuring long-term survival through improved, efficient, and resilient internal processes. It involves integrating sustainable practices, enhancing skills, and fostering a culture of continuous learning to address environmental, social, and economic goals.
Ayos ka Lungs? SM ZOTO Program
The “Ayos Ka Lungs” project is a community-based health initiative led by Samahan ng Mamamayan Zone One Tondo Inc. (SM ZOTO), an organization known for advocating the welfare of urban poor communities in the Philippines. As part of its mission to improve access to basic social services, the project focuses on addressing respiratory health issues, particularly tuberculosis (TB) and other lung-related diseases that commonly affect vulnerable populations.
The project is centered on providing free and accessible lung screening services, such as chest X-rays and medical consultations, especially for marginalized groups including low-income families, informal settlers, and even homeless individuals. Through mobile clinics and community outreach activities, the initiative brings healthcare directly to areas where access to hospitals and diagnostic services is limited. Its goal is not only to detect diseases early but also to raise awareness about the importance of lung health and preventive care.
As a result of the project, many individuals have been given the opportunity to undergo medical screening that they otherwise could not afford. Early detection of illnesses like tuberculosis allows patients to receive timely treatment through programs such as TB-DOTS, reducing the risk of complications and preventing the spread of infection within communities. The initiative has also contributed to increased public awareness, encouraging people to seek medical attention when experiencing symptoms such as prolonged cough or breathing difficulties.
The “Ayos Ka Lungs” project is also a strong example of collaborative effort. It involves partnerships with local government units, healthcare professionals, and other organizations to ensure that services are comprehensive and sustainable. Volunteers play a significant role in assisting with operations, managing patients, and supporting outreach activities. This collective approach strengthens the impact of the program and ensures that more people benefit from it.
